At Penn State, engagement is the scholarship of teaching, research, and creative accomplishment, as well as service that involves citizens and the University working in partnership to create and apply knowledge that addresses pressing societal issues and strengthens civic responsibility and democracy through mutually beneficial relationships. In the broadest sense, engaged scholarship is out-of-classroom experiences that complement classroom learning.
Engaged Scholarship and Penn State Outreach and Online Education
Outreach and Online Education plays a significant role in advancing Penn State as the premier engaged institution in the country. Through our engaged scholarship work, we cultivate vibrant relationships between faculty, staff, and students and the local, state, national, and global communities we serve. These robust community-University partnerships:
- connect the needs and interests of Penn State faculty and students across colleges, academic centers, and campuses with community needs and interests
- advance transformative regional engagements in communities, regions, and industry sectors in the Commonwealth
- increase the role of higher education in public media through the involvement and input of academic units
We are proud to serve as a catalyst, collaborator, and connecter on many fronts, including providing leadership for the University Council on Engaged Scholarship, sponsoring with the Faculty Senate the Faculty Outreach and Community Engagement and Scholarship Awards, directing The Penn State Center: Engaging Pittsburgh, and providing a wealth of student engagement opportunities.
Additionally, Penn State Outreach and Online Education is a founding member of the Engaged Scholarship Consortium, a nonprofit educational organization aimed at working collaboratively to build strong university-community partnerships anchored in the rigor of scholarship and designed to help build community capacity. We are also actively involved in the Council on Engagement and Outreach of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation’s (CIC) Committee on Engagement. Outreach and Online Education is also a founding member of the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship (ACES). The mission of ACES is to serve the public good by recognizing and contributing to high quality scholarship that—in active collaboration with participating community partners—has a positive impact on complex societal needs and issues.
