Penn State Outreach Highlights for Homecoming Weekend

Homecoming at Penn State is a time for Nittany Lions, past and present, to come together to celebrate their beloved University. This year promises to be extra special for the Penn State Outreach community, with members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) marching in the Homecoming Parade, and we’re sharing ways to add even more Outreach highlights to your weekend.

The Penn State Homecoming Parade is a dazzling spectacle featuring colorful floats, spirited marching bands, and enthusiastic Penn State fans. This year, our OLLI members, many of whom have a lifelong connection to Penn State, will proudly march, showcasing their enthusiasm for learning and their dedication to the University. As you watch the Parade, take a moment to appreciate the diversity of OLLI members’ backgrounds and interests. They represent a vibrant community of lifelong learners who embody the Penn State spirit. Be sure to cheer them on as they make their way through the streets of State College, spreading the message of lifelong learning and the enduring love for Penn State.

After the excitement of the Parade, you can continue to celebrate Outreach in the tranquil beauty of The Arboretum at Penn State. The Arboretum is located on East Park Avenue and offers a serene escape from the bustling Homecoming festivities. Stroll through the gardens and take in the breathtaking landscapes while surrounded by the colors of autumn.

The Arboretum’s themed gardens, including the Rose and Fragrance Garden, Childhood’s Gate Children’s Garden, and the Pollinator and Bird Garden, provide a unique and immersive experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you’re a current student, an alum, or a lifelong learner like those at OLLI, the Arboretum is a place where everyone can connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of Penn State’s campus.

No Penn State Outreach experience is complete without a visit to Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Located just a short drive from campus, Shaver’s Creek offers a nature-filled adventure for the whole family. We invite you to hike our trails, visit our wildlife center, and meet animal ambassadors including birds of prey, reptiles, and amphibians.

As you visit Shaver’s Creek, you’ll discover the importance of environmental education and conservation, deeply ingrained in Penn State’s culture. It’s a perfect destination to cap off your Homecoming weekend with a dose of nature and knowledge.
