Common Questions about Course Registration

How do I register for courses?

First step — schedule your course.

  • Current World Campus students — schedule your course via eLion.
  • First-time World Campus students — call us to schedule your first course. U.S. toll free: 800-252-3592 or local/international: 814-865-5403
  • Scheduling a World Campus course if you are not a World Campus student—if you are a Penn State student at another Penn State campus, always check with your academic adviser before registering for a World Campus course, to ensure that the course(s) you want to take will meet your degree requirements. You will need to contact our office to schedule your course. You may need to wait until seven days prior to the course start date before scheduling. Contact our office for specific details.

Second step — complete your registration by paying your student bill.
If you are scheduling less than 12 credits for a semester, be sure to indicate this in eLion via the Registration menu (on the left). After you schedule your course, be sure to complete your registration by paying your student bill.

I wasn’t able to schedule one of the courses I wanted this semester because it was full. Why couldn’t I just be added to the course? What’s one more person?

A high-quality academic experience is important. The World Campus follows strict guidelines set by Penn State academic units regarding the number of students permitted in each course section. Having too many students in a course prevents the type of faculty-student and student-student interaction required for effective online teaching and learning. Schedule your courses as soon as you are eligible to register.

Why can’t the World Campus just create an additional course section when a course is full?

Unfortunately, it isn’t that easy — World Campus instructors are the same Penn State faculty members who teach on campus during the semester. There isn’t always a faculty member available to teach an additional section.

Again, be sure to schedule your course(s) as soon as you are eligible to register.
