How to Study Effectively — Five Quick Tips

FACT: By the end of a semester, a standard 3-credit course may have covered more than a thousand pages of text and hundreds of definitions or problems.

Preparing for Your Exam Starts on the First Day of Classes!

Make a habit of reviewing all of your notes for all of your courses once a week — don't fall into the common trap of thinking you can prepare for exams on the night or week before.

Make Studying Convenient with Note Cards.

The easiest way to set up information in a uniform manner is to put individual statements on note cards. They are relatively inexpensive, and you can take them anywhere. By putting one part of a concept on either side of the note card, you can create a study guide and use it to quiz yourself. Once your study guides are created, you can flip through them virtually anywhere — while pumping gas, during your lunch break — wherever it is convenient for you!

Develop an Active Attitude to Learning.

Professors often test on how things fit into the big picture, not on small pieces of information. Engage with the material in your courses daily — consider how what you are learning fits into the big picture. Then, by the time exams roll around, you will actually be reviewing what you already know!

"Set It and Forget It!"

If you find yourself thinking about everything else you have to do while you are trying to study, try to keep a notepad next to you while you study; whenever you think of something you need to do, other than studying, jot it down so that you can refocus on your course material.

Beware of Electronic Distractions!

By minimizing the number of distractions, you can study more efficiently and effectively. If you are studying on or near your computer, be sure to close all of the windows you are not using (including e-mail and instant messaging) — and don’t forget to turn off your cell phone!
