Study Tour of Turkey: Archaeology, Heritage, and History
Turkey, which straddles the continents of Europe and Asia, has served as the crossroads of civilization for millennia and home to many of the world’s greatest civilizations. The 2012 study tour will include the environs of Turkey’s capital city, Ankara (Roman period Ankara and central Anatolia’s major Hittite sites); Amasya and its historic Ottoman period town; the spectacular natural and cultural Christian heritage of Cappadocia; Konya, home of the Mevlevi Sufi order of Islam and the whirling dervishes; world renown Çatal Höyük, one of the oldest Neolithic “cities” in the world; and three days sailing on a yacht visiting major classical and historic sites along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast. The tour will end with two full days in Istanbul, exploring the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman period treasures. Students can earn 3 or 6 credits. The study tour is led by Dr. Ann Killebrew, a Penn State faculty member and an archaeologist who has directed field projects in Turkey and Israel.
Accommodations will be in three- or four-star hotels (two to three students per room), with several nights on a gulet (wooden sailboat).
Transportation will be by air-conditioned bus and sailboat, with air travel from Dalaman to Istanbul. Lunches are not included in the fees.
Application deadline is March 1, 2012. Participation is limited to fifteen students.
