Why Study Abroad

Courses Offered

The program awards 9 academic credits. The students are required to enroll in three courses appropriate to their academic level and area of concentration. All materials required for the art courses in Ireland will be provided. A final project, either in writing or visual arts, must be submitted by the end of the summer session.

Eligibility

The program is open to all students with a minimum 2.5 grade-point average. Applicants are considered on a continuous, first-come, first-served basis. Students are encouraged to apply early, as enrollment is limited.

Faculty

Janet Lyon is an associate professor of English and women's studies at Penn State. Her research and teaching focus on twentieth-century British and Irish literature and culture, especially modernist and avant-garde groups active in the first half of the century (including James Joyce, W. B. Yeats, Flann O'Brien, and their compatriots). Professor Lyon has won several teaching awards and has published several articles and a book, Manifestoes: Provocations of the Modern (Cornell University Press, 1999). Patricia Howard is a fine arts photographer and educator. She has taught at Penn State for the School of Visual Arts and the College of Communications as well as in Puebla, Mexico, for the Summer Study Abroad program. She will teach the visual arts classes in Ireland.
