Courses Offered
CAMS/ANTH/JST 499 Excavation, Survey, and GIS for Archaeologists
(6 credits) entails excavation, intensive survey, and an introduction to GIS for archaeologists. This course will introduce the students to the basics of archaeological
excavation and survey methods, will give a general overview of the history and material culture of ancient Israel and the eastern Mediterranean, and will include an introductory
course to GIS. The students will participate in daily excavation on the tell, afternoon labs and pottery processing, and lectures.
Or
CAMS/ANTH/JST 499 Excavation, Conservation, and Public Archaeology (6 credits) entails excavation, conservation, and public archaeology. This course will introduce
students to the basics of archaeological excavation, in addition to workshops/lectures on conservation and seminars/lectures on dealing with the various communities and
shareholders involved with the preservation and interpretation of Israel’s archaeological sites.
Or
CAMS/ANTH/JST 496 Advanced Field Archaeology (6 credits) This course is designed for students with prior archaeological field experience. Students may register for this course only with the permission of the instructor and director of the project.
Graduate study credit is possible with permission from Dr. Ann E. Killebrew.
Or a combination of EM SC 499 and CAMS/ANTH/JST 499 (3 credits):EM SC 499 (3 credits) is a 3-credit introduction to diving course for students already holding a basic open-water scuba diving certification from an internationally recognized certification agency (e.g., PADI, NAUI, CMAS, YMCA, SSI) and proof of recent diving experience. The course will cover advanced recreational diving techniques and introduction to science diving. The underwater archaeology component will be conducted in cooperation with underwater archaeologists at the Department of Maritime Civilizations, University of Haifa.
EM SC 496 (3 credits) is possible with the permission of Dr. Tim White.
And
Students in EM SC 499 will also be required to enroll in CAMS/ANTH/JST 499 (3 credits) as part of the archaeology component of this field school.
An additional post-excavation 3-credit study tour of Israel (July 28–August 8) is also available.
Eligibility
The program is open to all Penn State students and students from other institutions with a minimum 2.5 grade-point average. Applicants are considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are encouraged to apply early, as enrollment is limited.
Faculty
Dr. Ann E. Killebrew, director of the Akko Archaeological Project in Israel, is an associate professor of archaeology in the Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, the Jewish Studies Program, and the Department of Anthropology at Penn State. She has participated in numerous archaeological expeditions in Israel and co-directs the Landscape Archaeology Project in Cilicia, Turkey. She is a noted expert on cultural interconnections in the eastern Mediterranean region and has authored and co-edited several books and numerous articles.
Brandon Olson, GIS instructor, is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Archaeology at Boston University. He has participated in numerous archaeological projects in Turkey, Cyprus, and Israel.
Dr. Tim White, science diving instructor, is a research associate in the Earth and Mineral Sciences and Environmental Systems Institute. His research interests include sedimentary geology, paleoclimatology, paleopedology, chemostratigraphy, organic petrology and hydrogeology.
