Spring 2008 Youth/Scout Programs

Please note: All programs satisfy a Tiger Scout elective. Reservations are required for each program and must be made by calling 814-863-2000. You will be asked to provide a credit card number and complete contact information. You will not be charged until the program is held. (You may ask for coordinator Allison D'Ambrosia, or e-mail her if time allows at aed175@psu.edu.)

Cold Weather Creatures
Saturday, February 2, 2008
Time: 10:00 a.m.–noon
Ages: 6–8

It's Groundhog Day, and we're hoping Phil doesn't see his shadow for an early spring, but where has he been all winter? Where do all of his other friends go in the wintertime? How do animals survive the cold weather? Come explore the special wintertime animals and discover how they can make it through the snow and cold! We will spend the morning exploring and discovering and, hopefully, even seeing some of Pennsylvania's special winter animals.

Backyard Birding

Time: 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Ages: 8–11

Do you have bird feeders in your backyard? Have you ever wondered what those birds are that keep coming back? Come learn about the common birds you might find in your backyard and how to keep them coming back. We'll see how many different species we can find!

Animal Physiology—How do they really work?

Ages: 15–17

Ever wonder how animals really do function? Ever wonder what a heart feels like or how a liver works? We are going to spend the afternoon looking at the body systems of some common farmyard animals to discover how everyday body functions actually occur. You will be given the opportunity to handle and investigate real organs!

Natural Builders

Time: noon–3:00 p.m.
Ages: 8–11

Being able to attract wildlife to your yard is a great way to learn, so let's build the creatures something! Come learn how to build a bat box or a birdhouse, and all about the creatures that will come to live in them. We will have a fun-filled afternoon learning and building, and then you can take your house home to see what comes! There is also the opportunity to purchase Woodcrafting for Wildlife, an excellent book published here in Pennsylvania about many other great ways to attract nature to your house.

Butterflies and Moths

From the Grass to the Clouds

Ages: 6–8

Just in time for Earth Day (April 22), we are going to spend the afternoon exploring everything from the dirt all the way up to the big blue sky. We'll get our hands nice and dirty exploring what is on the forest floor and then look skyward to explore what is up in the tree tops and soaring through the sky.

Water Ecology: Stream to Lake

Time: 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Ages: 12–15

The ecology of our watershed is an amazingly diverse world. Come explore and discover the inhabitants of Shaver's Creek and Lake Perez, comparing the differences and similarities. Studying the life in the water can tell us many things about the surrounding environment—let's see what we find! After spending the morning looking at the creek system, we will do a stream study in Shaver's Creek! Bring an old pair of shoes that are OK to get wet.
