Work or Volunteer at Shaver's Creek

Shaver's Creek offers a wide variety of professional and part-time positions as well as numerous volunteer opportunities for individuals, groups, and Penn State students. Alumni of Shaver's Creek are welcome to learn more about getting involved with the Shaver's Creek Alumni Interest Group.

Internships
We offer one of the best and broadest environmental education internships in the U.S., and we attract interns from around the country. Our interns feel well-trained to take on professional roles at nature centers, state parks and agencies, and the private sector when they depart. We also offer three other internship experiences—Raptor Center internship, Adventure Programs internship (summer only), and Communications/Marketing internship. Click here for an application (environmental education interns) and more detailed information on all internships.

Work-Study Positions
Shaver's Creek also offers work-study positions for Penn State students. For more information, contact Doug Wentzel (djw105@outreach.psu.edu) or Tammi Richard (tyr1@outreach.psu.edu) at 814-863-2000.

Work-study is a student financial aid program for undergraduate and graduate students. Please check with the Penn State Office of Student Aid for information on eligibility and the application process. Once you have been awarded a grant, you can put your skills and talents to work at Shaver's Creek. You may choose from:

  • animal care
  • grounds, trails, and facilities
  • programs
  • bookstore and reception desk
  • special events
For descriptions of these duties, see the volunteering page.

Contract Teambuilding Facilitators
Our large volume of teambuilding programs requires us to contract with facilitators for individual programs throughout the year. If you are a qualified facilitator or would like to become one, contact Rod Lee (rml10@psu.edu) at 814-863-2000.  If you are interested in becoming a group leader for the ORION or Urban Service Experience courses, contact us to learn more.

Volunteering
Individuals and groups can volunteer in many ways, from working with children in our educational programs to caring for animals or the grounds to greeting the community at one of our festivals. This is particularly beneficial to Penn State students in majors that require volunteer hours to be completed prior to graduation. Click here to learn more about volunteering.

Professional Positions
There are no full-time positions currently available. However, each summer we are in need of a front desk receptionist for several months to greet guests, help with camp registrations, and perform other duties essential to the center's operation. If you are interested, call 814-863-2000 or e-mail us.
