Plant yer own patch! An introduction to American ginseng forest farming
Wednesday, August 26
7–8:30 p.m.

Interested in native plants? Enjoy spending time in the woods? Looking for a way to diversify farm income or help cover annual forestland ownership costs? In this workshop, participants will be introduced to one of Pennsylvania's most valuable crops, American ginseng. Eric Burkhart, instructor and program director for plant science at Shaver's Creek, will talk about establishing or "farming" American ginseng on Pennsylvania forestlands — a fascinating and potentially profitable activity that can contribute to both plant and forestland conservation. The botany, biology, ecology, markets, growing options, propagation techniques, and management issues (pests, theft, regulations) will all be covered. This program is run by Penn State's Agricultural Extension office. Register here.

Brook Trout Comeback?
Postponed to a date TBD

Are Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) regulations, designed to bring back Pennsylvania's state fish, working? Researcher Patrick Kocovsky is working to complete a five-year anglers study of the PFBC's first Wild Brook Trout Enhancement Areas in Potter County. While data are still being compiled and analyzed, the instructor will explain what the regulations are and what has been learned thus far about the effects of habitats and state regulations on brook trout.
