Shaver's Creek Environmental Center

Addresses the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for:
Environment and Ecology and Science and Technology

We have updated and modified our School Programs to help teachers address some of these standards. While our Shaver's Creek programs can't claim to meet the standards, they will introduce, reinforce or help with the culmination of learning experiences in the classroom. The Shaver's Creek staff considers Guided Nature Center Visits and Discovery Walks educational adventures—not merely a "day off" from school. While our initial goal is for every student to have fun and be comfortable exploring the natural world, we are striving to help classroom teachers meet the PA Academic Standards as part of an ongoing classroom experience.

Goals of Shaver's Creek Field Trips:

  • TO HAVE FUN
  • To increase students' and chaperones' comfort levels in exploring the outdoors
  • To increase children's observational skills of the world around them—indoors, outdoors, in school, at home—for a lifetime
  • To allow children the experience of exploring, rather than the rote learning of facts
