ORION Registration Information
To participate in ORION, you must first fill out an online student application. Upon acceptance into an ORION session, Shaver’s Creek will enroll you in KINES 089, ORION Wilderness Experience. DO NOT drop this course from your schedule. Dropping this course WILL result in you losing your space in the ORION program. If you decide that you would like KINES 089 dropped from your schedule, you must notify us by email at orion@outreach.psu.edu. If the course drop takes place after the late drop deadline during the semester in which you are enrolled, you will incur a fine and be held responsible for the course tuition. Contact our office if you have any questions regarding this process.
Because ORION is a 2-credit Penn State course (KINES 089), there is no additional tuition fee if you are enrolled as a full-time student in the semester you take ORION. The tuition fee will be covered in your semester bill.
In addition to tuition, there is a nonrefundable program fee of $225 that will be billed directly to your student account upon participation in the program. This fee includes instruction, special equipment, camping gear (sleeping bag, backpack, transportation, tent, etc.), and food for the expedition.
If you opt to drive your own car to ORION and park on campus during your expedition, you can reserve a parking permit for $23 in advance on your application. This fee will also be billed to your student account.
ORION has a waiting list, so if you must cancel, please do so by email at orion@outreach.psu.edu at least three weeks prior to the expedition departure date as a courtesy to other students so they can enjoy the ORION experience.
ORION fulfills 2 of the 3 Penn State General Health Activity (GHA) credits.
