Shaver's Creek Environmental Center recruits college students and some high school seniors to be counselors each week for the fifth-graders at Outdoor School.
Being an Outdoor School counselor is a weeklong commitment. Counselors attend two evening training sessions at Shaver's Creek. On Monday of their assigned week, counselors return to Camp Blue Diamond at 2 p.m. for a final training session.
Counselors present a cultural history lesson through first person interpretation as an 1850s pioneer family member. Counselors attend two evening training sessions at the Civil Engineering Lodge in the Stone Valley Recreation Area. On Monday of the assigned week, counselors come back to the lodge at 1:00 p.m. for a final training session. The students arrive on Tuesday. Counselors have Wednesday afternoon off. The week ends on Friday afternoon.
