| Space Explorers February 8, 2009 4–6 p.m. Ages: 6-8 Cost: $4 non-members; $2 members Badges: Brownie Try-It: Space Explorer; Arrow Point Trail: Space Ever wonder what is out there? The mysteries of space are still being unraveled today. Come learn about the stars and constellations with us as well as stories associated with them. Experience our indoor “planetarium” designed by our own Doug Steigerwalt where you can see stars in the middle of the afternoon. We’ll learn how the seasons work and why the moon appears to change shape every night. The stars and planets are amazing things! Be a rocket scientist for the day with us at Shaver’s Creek. Weather Wonders February 15, 2009 1–3 p.m. Ages: 6-8 Cost: $4 non-members; $2 members How do you predict the weather? As the season changes, we often look at the weather to plan our days. Whether it be sun, rain, snow, or hail, all different types of weather can be seen in Pennsylvania. This program will involve learning about the different seasons and building homemade weather instruments to assist you in improving your meteorology skills! Time Travel February 21, 2009 10 a.m.–noon Ages: 8-10 Cost: $5 non-members; $3 members Do you ever wonder what central Pennsylvania was like 200 years ago? Be a part of an afternoon discovering and interacting with historical tools, toys, and household items. Hands-on activities and building your own historical gadgets will take you all the way back to before there was electricity! Going back in time was never so much fun! Backyard Birding March 22, 2009 1–3 p.m. Ages: 8-10 Cost: $3 non-members; free for members A classic program loved by many, backyard birding is a great way to begin a fun hobby. With warmer weather, our winged friends migrate and return to Pennsylvania for the warmer seasons. While walking the trails at Shaver’s Creek and learning how to use different kinds of binoculars, we will look for, listen for, and discover the birds of central Pennsylvania! Fun Flower Find April 4, 2009 10 a.m.–noon Ages: 8-10 Cost: $3 non-members; free for members Have you ever noticed the different colors, sizes, and kinds of flowers throughout central Pennsylvania in the spring time? As the snow thaws and the rain waters the ground, wildflowers begin to show themselves in all their splendor. Come with us to explore, find, and identify the first emerging wildflowers of the spring season! A Walk in the Woods April 11, 2009 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Ages: families welcome (recommended for children ages 6-10) Cost: $3 non-members; free for members Hiking is a wonderful way to get out and experience the simple joys of nature. Join us for a fun afternoon of exploring the trails and discovering all elements of the environment from birds to mammals, from flowers to trees, and whatever else we can find! **Bring a brown bag lunch to enjoy on the trail** Wilderness Survival Skills April 18–April 19, 2009 11 a.m. April 18 through 10 a.m. April 19 More details to come! GPS May 9, 2009 We are currently awaiting confirmation of this program from the Penn State School of Forest Resources.
