Wastewater Bacteria—3 hours, 0.3 CEU

Wastewater Bacteria reviews the significant bacterial groups, the roles they perform in wastewater treatment, and the operational conditions that affect their activity.  The roles that are performed by each bacterial group may be positive and/or negative to the treatment processes and depend upon the operational conditions of each process.  Effective control and proper operation of each process is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of bacterial activity and growth that are presented in this course.  Several of the significant groups of bacteria that are reviewed are 1) denitrifying bacteria, 2) fermentative (acetate-forming and acid-forming) bacteria, 3) filamentous bacteria, 4) floc-forming bacteria, 5) hydrolytic bacteria, 6) methane-forming bacteria, 7) nitrifying bacteria, 8) pathogenic bacteria, 9) poly-P bacteria, 10) sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, and 11) sulfur-reducing bacteria.
