Camp English

A volunteer English teaching opportunity in Otavalo, Ecuador

Teachers who have already completed the TESL certificate have the opportunity to return to Ecuador in the summer as volunteer teachers to offer English instruction to local children who cannot afford the cost of English instruction at the local university. Called Camp English, this project, using the contributions of past TESL program participants and donated teaching materials, will allow children from families with limited economic resources to learn English. The program is funded by contributions from persons who are aware of the obstacles that people in other countries face in participating in the global community without English language skills. Penn State supports the program through indirect contributions of materials and logistical support.

Twenty-four students, ages 10–12, will meet four mornings a week for three weeks, from mid-July to August, at the Universidad de Otavalo, in the beautiful town of Otavalo. A part of the English learning will take place at the university, but most of it will happen outside the school during various excursions into the local community and surrounding region. These young students will have the rare opportunity to practice and study with teachers who are native English speakers, and they will be doing it in the context of actually exploring their own surroundings.

To make a contribution to this valuable project that will provide funds directly to young Ecuadorian students, write to Elizabeth Smolcic at eas260@psu.edu.
