Penn State’s teaching certificate program in TESL (Teaching
English as a Second Language) combines on-campus courses and an international field experience. The participants do their practice teaching in Otavalo, Ecuador. The Ecuadorian
community provides a vibrant cultural context in which to experience the challenges and triumphs of using, and learning to teach, a second language.
The TESL specialist certificate program is conducted at two locations: Penn State University Park and the Universidad de Otavalo, in Ecuador. The program is held from February through August. So that you can participate from a distance, the courses on the Penn State University Park campus are scheduled on weekends, and all courses are delivered with an online component. In June, the group travels to Ecuador’s Andean highlands for an intense four-week learning experience.
