Lesley Nearman Awards

About Lesley Nearman

On Friday, September 21, 2001, the Pennsylvania Coalition to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (PCPTP) experienced a great loss. The day after the board’s September meeting, board member Lesley Nearman and her husband were killed in an automobile accident. Lesley and her family were traveling on vacation combined with a conference her husband was to attend. Their two children were also in the car; both escaped serious injury. Lesley worked for the Family Health Council of Central Pennsylvania for several years, and while there, was instrumental in helping the coalition before it was able to hire paid staff.

In Lesley’s honor, the coalition distributes the Lesley Nearman awards annually at the conference.

Mission of the PCPTP

To provide statewide leadership on the issue of adolescent pregnancy prevention through advocacy, education, and support for community efforts.

Purpose

The PCPTP wishes to recognize, on an annual basis, outstanding effort that works to further our mission. Each year, one award will be presented to an individual, one to a community-based group, and one to a statewide or national organization, and one to an adolescent or an organized group of adolescents.

Criteria

Nominees for this award must work to further the stated mission of the PCPTP, and additionally must agree with each of the position statements adopted by the Board of Directors of the PCPTP (copies available upon request). Nominees for the individual, community-based group and adolescent awards must conduct their professional work within the state of Pennsylvania.

Process

An individual or organization working on the issue of adolescent pregnancy prevention may submit nominations to PCPTP. Awards will be distributed during the annual PCPTP and Penn State conference on Teen Pregnancy Prevention held each fall.

All nominations are due by March 1 for the awards to be distributed that calendar year.

Nominations received after March 1 will be considered for the following calendar year. A committee appointed by the PCPTP Board of Directors will decide upon the award winners.
