Keynote Sessions
Dr. Yolanda (Landi) Turner will
be our opening keynote speaker.
If what “conventional wisdom” suggests is true, we should be ever vigilant in monitoring teens’ use of technology. It seems every television talk show, magazine article, and news story is warning us to “be afraid… be very afraid”. Sexting, social networking, cyber bullying, stranger contact, and teens viewing pornography are major concerns for parents and educators. But, how are young people actually using these new technologies? Are they truly putting themselves at risk? What specifics should we be paying attention to when it comes to teens and technology?
Keynote speaker, Yolanda Turner, will explore these questions, and present current research addressing the realities of teens in cyber space – encouraging participants to separate the hype and hysteria from research and reality.
Mr. William (Bill) Taverner, M.A.,
AASECT, will be our featured luncheon speaker. His talk is titled New Technologies, New Opportunities. The old sex ed mantra “Meet young people where they are” takes on new
meaning in a world where the places where young people “are” include cell phones, IPhones and IPads; where homework is researched on Wikipedia and presented on PowerPoint; where
entertainment comes from Hulu and YouTube; where everyone stays connected through MySpace and Facebook, and tweets the latest happenings; where some teens are cyber-bullied and others are
arrested for sexting. Yes, it’s a different world today. Or is it? In this keynote address, Bill Taverner, editor of the American Journal of Sexuality Education and director
of The Center for Family Life Education at Planned Parenthood will explore the context in which young people learned about sexuality in the past and today. Participants will consider
the dizzying array of new and emerging technologies for their potential as allies in sexuality education.
Dr. Mark Schoen is the president of SexSmartFilms.
He will be the evening speaker.
His session is called Smarter Sexual Health Education: Strategic Use of Technology. Get ready for a digital media blast! Sexual health videos, Web sites, streaming, downloading, uploading, and more! Each of these will be explored, with an emphasis on how they can benefit your sexual health teaching.
The session begins with a historical perspective on sexual health media, tracks the evolution into the digital age, and ends with a look forward at your professional future. Participants will see a wide range of media and learn how to use these resources for maximum impact on your students. Designed for technophobes and geeks alike, this program will stimulate and inspire you with films, ideas, and skills.
