Course Schedule

Summer Musical Theatre Program

Acting, instructed by Matt Toronto: The level-based acting and scene study classes are designed to address the experiential needs of individual students. The classes will exercise as a group and individually, and the set of acting tools taught will be applied in monologues, scene study work, auditioning, and public readings. The faculty will place students in specific classes based on skill and performance experience. There will be three classes per a week.

Musical Theatre Performance, instructed by Susan Russell: This class is designed to teach a specific set of skills that can be applied immediately to work and artistic direction. The skills taught will be exercised in solo work, ensemble work, auditioning, and public readings. There will be three classes per week.

Musical Theatre Voice and Auditioning, instructed by Susan Russell and Raymond Sage: This class will be approached from literature, pedagogy, and performance. The students will be introduced to basic and advanced skill sets that can be applied immediately to the art of singing and auditioning. The goal of the class is to emerge from the summer session with an understanding of the musical theatre voice, and two to three contrasting pieces that are ready to be used in a professional audition. There will be three classes per week. The students will also be able to take private voice lessons if desired.

Dance, instructed by Michele Dunleavy: These level-based classes will address individual needs as well as artistic exposure and experience. The students will take scheduled classes every day in jazz, tap, and ballet, and there will be specialized classes in musical theatre styles and hip-hop.

Summer Playwriting Program

Each workshop is available for writers who are new to playwriting (beginner to moderate) and writers who want to develop an existing play (moderate to advanced).

HERO'S JOURNEY, instructed by Sean Christopher Lewis: How does Arthur Miller make family dramas work like Greek Tragedy? What are the steps and techniques to better fulfill your story's aspirations? Playwright and Solo Performer Sean Christopher Lewis explores mythic storytelling structure to develop a stronger story and largeness to the playwright's works.

THE THEATRICALITY OF METAPHOR, instructed by Jennifer Fawcett: Canadian playwright Jennifer Fawcett takes students on a creative journey to explore the ways that symbol and metaphor can add depth and meaning to a play so that it resonates on multiple levels. This is an excellent workshop for playwrights looking to deepen the meaning and complexity of their play’s themes and language.

FROM PAGE TO STAGE, instructed by Sean Christopher Lewis: It’s often said that a script is only the blueprint, or recipe, for a play. As an actor and director, Sean Lewis helps playwrights see their work as a director, designer, and actor will so they can discover how their play works off the page and on the stage.

REVISION MADE FUN, instructed by Jennifer Fawcett: So you’ve written a first draft … now what? Jennifer Fawcett introduces techniques to flesh out and excite the characters and situations in your play. This is a great class for students looking to drive their play towards a more polished draft.

THE WORKSHOP, instructed by Jennifer Fawcett and Sean Christopher Lewis: With experience gained at national development conferences, from the Lark Playwrights’ Week to Play Penn and many more in between, Jennifer Fawcett and Sean Lewis give you the nuts and bolts of how to navigate and get the most out of new play development. Each writer will be given their own workshop over the course of their stay.
