Summer Dance Program

Description

This program deals with dance as an academic program of study in college. The focus is mainly on Western concert dance form, consisting of many techniques, styles, and systems of movement. Emphasis is placed on gaining greater technical proficiency, developing a personalized movement vocabulary, and self-expression. Importance is placed on finding organic, efficient, and dynamic ways to engage the body in movement. The participants will build on the principles needed for a strong technical foundation for all dance forms by working on basic body concepts and connections. They will leave this program with more confidence, clarity in execution, stronger technical skills, and an understanding of the dance program at Penn State.

Goals for this class

  • Gain a functional understanding of modern/contemporary dance technique
  • Understand and demonstrate different uses of weight as applied to class material, and understand the concept of accessing your weight and "grounding"
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic dance fundamentals, such as space, time, and energy
  • Gain a vocabulary for discussing and writing about the body and modern dance
  • Begin to develop a personal movement vocabulary and cultivate responsiveness to creative abilities
  • Increase technical proficiency and strengthen body connections
  • Gain greater technical proficiency, flexibility, strength, and alignment
  • Develop as an individual mover (with a personal artistic voice) in terms of dynamics, weight usage, and intention, as well as make clear choices in how to present and perform the material
  • Gain greater confidence in using the body as a tool of expression and communication

Requirements for this class

  • Demonstrate an open and willing attitude.
  • Demonstrate appropriate class etiquette: not talking while others are dancing, always making an effort, dressing appropriately for each class, and creating a supportive environment for all classmates.
  • Demonstrate, through class material and discussions, an understanding of, and continued growth in, key concepts.

Dress Requirements

Do not wear shoes, socks, blue jeans, slacks, or footed tights. Leotards, footless tights, workout attire, tank tops, and shirts are appropriate, as well as sweat pants that are not excessively baggy. Pants should not drag on the floor. You need to feel comfortable and be able to move.

Other

Talking while others are dancing is rude and unacceptable behavior. Excessive talking will result in a lower participation grade. You may also be asked to leave class, resulting in an absence for the day.

Throughout each class period, there will be no sitting down. If you are injured or sick and must step out of class, you will not be permitted to return to dancing.

NO CHEWING GUM in class.
