Preconference Workshops


1. Intro to Webinars and Enhancing PowerPoint and Other Presentations through Graphic Designs
Joe Walk, Instructor, Management Development Programs and Services, Penn State

Attendees will learn how to insert graphics into PowerPoint presentations in order to clarify concepts and how to animate objects. Techniques to gain and maintain attention through visuals will be presented. Attendees will participate in an Adobe Connect Web conference demonstration. Only 24 seats are available for this workshop!

2. An Active Learning Environment: Activities and Games for the Classroom
Leeanna Clark, Staff Development Coordinator, The Williamsport Home
Donna Milner, Allied Health Instructor, Bucks County Technical High School

This workshop will highlight different types of games and how each can be utilized for different concepts and objectives in the classroom. Some examples of games are scavenger hunts, picture hunts, fire alarm, and twenty questions. Games, such as Review-opoloy, Jeopardy, Deal or No Deal, and Skill-o-rama will be reviewed for specific information.

Michele Deck, President and CEO, G.A.M.E.S.; CEO, Tool Thyme for Trainers

Deck will discuss the eight learning styles and their characteristics. She'll also compare and contrast the multiple methods that you can use to teach — and reach — each style of learner.

1. Inject New Life into Teaching

Deck will discuss three ways to successfully set the stage for learning, including creating positive human connections, comparing analytical learners versus friendly ones, and providing sample activities. She'll also present three ways to regain learner attention and three ways to revisit content.

2. PSNA Questions and Answers
Patti Gates Smith, Director of Professional Development, Pennsylvania State Nurses Association

The development of Act 58, the process of obtaining education for licensure renewal and educational opportunities available through PSNA, will be discussed. Questions regarding PSNA will be answered.

1. NATCEP Update
Sheri Weidman, State Coordinator, Nurse Aide Training Program 

Participants will be presented with an overview of the NATCEP survey and provided with the administrative requirements for a state-approved nurse aide training and competency evaluation program. Various forms for improving NATCEPs will be introduced and discussed. The 2010 calendar for Report of Change meetings and assorted applications will be reviewed, and fictitious criminal history information reports will be analyzed and reviewed. 

2. Highway to the Danger Zone! 
Scott and Margaret Major, Technology Coordinators, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center

This session will define key legal, social and ethical "danger zones" related to education in the digital age. You will learn to recognize how current and emerging technology trends impact school policy and acknowledge the need to anticipate change as your schools navigate through the Information Age.

1. HSTE Update
Esther Brown, Health Occupations Program Specialist, Pennsylvania Department of Education

 

The Health Science Technology Education (HSTE) update will be composed of a review of important details involving the Perkins IV requirement of establishing Programs of Study with their corresponding task grids for all career and technical education (CTE) programs. The Career and Technical Education Information System, which is used to enter specific information for new or existing CTE programs, will be also be discussed. Lastly, the Approved Program Evaluation process, which involves an on-site review of all CTE programs at a school ensuring the programs meet the requirements of Chapter 4 and Chapter 339, will be discussed.

1. Pearson VUE — Question and Answer and American Red Cross

Debra Snyder, American Red Cross

Durante will describe application deficiencies, identify test sites, compare testing volume, provide Pass Rate Statistics, and compare 2009 Exit Survey results with 2008. She'll also describe the new written exam, effective January 1, 2010, and the role of NCSBN.

2. New and Exciting Tools: WebQuests and Social Networks
Cathy Thomas, Lecturer of Education, Professional Personnel Development Center, Penn State

Those attending this session will learn what a WebQuest is and will be able to list the components of a WebQuest and their functions. Attendees will also learn to identify sites that have WebQuest appropriate to their subject content. In addition, attendees will understand the reasons for utilizing WebQuest and determine the structure of a sample WebQuest.
