Military Students, Veterans, and Dependents

Penn State Continuing Education is proud to welcome students who are serving or have served in the military, and their dependents. Once you've found a Continuing Education program that meets your needs, contact one of our academic advisers to discuss the program and how to apply.

Active Military Persons and Veterans

You will need to provide military transcripts at the time you apply for admission to one of our degree programs. The Undergraduate Admissions Office will evaluate your military transcripts for transfer credits.

If you are a member of the active armed forces or selected reserves, Penn State has policies to help you if you are deployed in the future and unable to continue your studies.

Financial Aid Options

If you are a veteran and have questions about how to use your benefits to pay for courses, contact Terry Johnson or Dr. Brian Clark in Penn State’s Office of Veterans Programs. They will guide you through the funding process appropriate to your specific situation and provide you with appropriate forms and instructions for their completion.

Credit for Military Experience

U.S. Department of Defense Military Occupational Specialty: A veteran or member of the active armed services or the selected reserves who is a student may be granted academic credit for Military Occupational Specialties held in the armed services, in accordance with University policy.

A student who is a veteran or member of the active armed services or reserves may be granted credit for educational experiences in the armed services. Students interested in receiving credit for their educational experiences in the military should submit any applicable transcript (SMART, AARTS, CC of the Air Force, or DD-214), along with any other academic transcripts, to our Undergraduate Admissions Office at the time of application. Any credits received for educational experiences in the armed services will appear on a Penn State transcript as transfer credits.

Students who have completed basic training may be awarded credit in health education or exercise and sport activities. General credit may be awarded for other types of service school courses. A limited number of credits may be awarded for advanced training for military specialization duties.

To be awarded credit for DANTES courses, DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), and U.S. Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) courses, contact us.

Dependents

We encourage you to contact the Office of Veterans Programs. Someone in that office will guide you through the funding process appropriate to your specific situation and provide you with appropriate forms and instructions for their completion.
