What’s New for Students?

New Peer Mentoring Program Regardless of your reasons for returning to school, there is almost always a bit of nervousness, a little anxiety, and a lot of expectations that first semester. The new mentoring program connects new students with "experienced" students who've completed at least two semesters of enrollment and want to help others successfully transition to Penn State. We are accepting applications for both mentors and mentees. Be sure to check out additional mentoring program information and consider completing the application forms.

Save Time. Save Money. Take CLEP. The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) is a service of The College Board. CLEP gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any of thirty-four examinations. It allows you to earn credit for knowledge you've acquired through independent study, prior course work, on-the-job training, professional development, cultural pursuits, or internships. Penn State awards credits for many of the CLEP exams. You should talk with your academic adviser before taking any CLEP exams, to learn how CLEP might help you fulfill degree requirements. The University Park CLEP Testing Center is located in 128 Outreach Building.

Organizational Leadership Networking Reception Continuing Education students often mention that they would welcome the opportunity to meet other students in the same major, which can be hard to do, sometimes, given individual schedules, work conflicts, and personal obligations. We're going to make it happen, beginning with students in the organizational leadership major! On Wednesday, August 12, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., a career-focused networking reception will be held for organizational leadership majors—new, already enrolled, and alums. Invitations will be sent in mid-July. Denise Gladd (an organizational leadership major and CE Student Advisory Panel member), along with the Student Services Team, will moderate the event.

Fall Semester Orientation Programs Let's Start Smart this fall semester! Plans are underway for two fall semester orientation programs—one at University Park (Saturday, August 22) and one at the Learning Center (Saturday, August 29). The agendas will include a lively mix of academic information (tools you needs to know!), success strategies (such as how to be a good online learner), and the chance to meet and greet other Penn State adult students, staff, and faculty. We encourage you to bring family members and/or a friend to share in the Penn State spirit. Don't worry—you won't have to give up your entire Saturday; the programs will conclude early in the afternoon.

Summer Commencement Six Continuing Education students are scheduled to graduate on August 15. Continuing Education and the World Campus will co-host a graduation reception that day from noon to 2:00 p.m., in the Outreach Building Lobby. This is a wonderful event for graduates and their families, even if they don't plan to attend the formal commencement ceremonies. Caps and gowns are not required for the reception, but if you would like to bring yours, a photographer will be there to take a complimentary photo of you and your guests. Graduates should have received their invitation in the mail. Don't forget to RSVP by calling Continuing Education at 800-228-1627 or e-mailing psu4you@outreach.psu.edu.

Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society As of July 1, the Pi Delta Chi chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda—the national honorary society for adult learners—has expanded its membership to include all adult learners at University Park and World Campus. Students are invited to become members, based on a required number of completed credits and a minimum GPA.
