Liz LasherCareer Services: Your Penn State Edge

How many times have you visited your Continuing Education career counselor? I would guess that most of you would either say, "I haven't" or "I didn't know that we had a career counselor in Continuing Education." In any event, it is never too late to take advantage of the career-related services available to you through Continuing Education.

Whether you are a first-semester student or about to graduate, you can benefit from career counseling. It can give you the opportunity to:

  • engage in self-exploration to determine your interests, abilities, values, transferrable skills, and personality traits in relation to areas of study, and ultimately, your career choice
  • make informed decisions, establish personal goals, and develop a plan of action for reaching those goals
  • access reliable information and resources to help empower you in your career and life decision-making process
  • gain support from a trained professional to cope more effectively with career and life changes or stressors
  • develop an effective résumé and cover letter that represents you in the most positive light
  • learn effective job search strategies, including how to network effectively, improve on your interviewing skills, and give yourself an edge in the interview, as well as find out what you can do after the interview to help in your job quest
  • talk things over with someone who can lend an objective ear and perspective

Individual career counseling is a shared and collaborative process. My role is to provide a structured process for career exploration and decision making. In addition, I act as a resource person and a sounding board; there is no other person who will know you better than yourself.

Together, we can sort things out, but you should decide what major is comfortable for you. I provide feedback, offer suggestions and resources, and maybe give you a new perspective. Career counseling sessions can range from a single meeting to many, depending on the assistance you want or what you would like to accomplish.

Career Workshops

In addition to individual career counseling, I run group workshops and career-focused programs throughout the year. Be sure to check the Continuing Education Web site regularly for upcoming workshops at www.psu4you.org/events.
