Penn State

Issue 5  July 2009

Welcome!

Once July 4 comes and goes, I always know (sadly!) that summer is half over, and my thoughts about work turn to the start-up of fall semester. For those of you who are enrolled in summer courses, you've finished session I, and perhaps you're in the midst of additional courses during the second session. Hopefully, it's all going well. There is much news to share, so let me provide information on upcoming programs and new initiatives for Continuing Education students:

  • Fall catalogs are now available, and many of you should have received a copy in the mail. If you haven’t received a copy, please call our office at 800-228-1627; we'll gladly mail one to you. Lewistown and Williamsport students can obtain copies at their respective locations. View the catalog online.
  • At the recommendation of our Continuing Education Student Advisory Panel, a peer mentoring program—composed of current Continuing Education students who help new Continuing Education students successfully transition to Penn State during their first semester—is available beginning in the fall semester. Consider signing on as a mentor or mentee.
  • Bill Fritz joined the Student Services Team in March. A great addition to the team, Bill is responsible for enrolling students from across our service area in Continuing Education programs; he'll be available to help students through the admission and enrollment process. You'll have the opportunity to meet Bill, as he'll become a familiar presence at the Lewistown, Philipsburg, and Williamsport locations. Be sure to read Bill's column in this issue of the newsletter.
  • Start Smart! We have planned fall semester orientation programs for students at University Park (Saturday, August 22) and Lewistown (Saturday, August 29). The agenda includes sharing of important academic information (tools for the toolbox!) and celebrating the beginning of fall semester with family and friends. Students, either currently enrolled or new, are invited to attend. Check the Continuing Education Web site for program details.
  • Learn about CLEP Tests! Effective August 1, Penn State University Park is a new test center for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) that gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know, when you earn qualifying scores on any of thirty-four examinations.

The Continuing Education student services team strives to provide high-quality customer service to our students from the first point of contact, via phone or in person. We offer help with course scheduling and registration, top-notch academic advising and career services, and overall support of students enrolled in Continuing Education courses and programs in Lewistown, Philipsburg, State College, and Williamsport.

Our offices are located in 121 Outreach Building in Innovation Park on the University Park campus, near The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. Our office number is 814-865-3443 or, toll-free, 800-252-3592. Staff members are available to take your calls Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
