Penn State Continuing Education Partners

Penn State's vision of engagement involves the integration of teaching, research, and service to enable its faculty, staff, and students to address pressing societal challenges faced by its communities. This integration is intended to inform and invigorate each of the missions, while simultaneously encouraging faculty to cut across disciplinary lines to work reciprocally and in partnership with communities on problems of mutual concern. Fundamental to this vision is that scholarship represents a core value and output of the University, and should be evidenced and evaluated in all engagement activities.

Forming Outreach Community-University Systems (FOCUS) grant
Through a grant from The Kellogg Foundation, Statewide Continuing and Professional Education is working with selected parents to assist them as they work with their children on reading skills. Read more in the news story available at http://live.psu.edu/story/11139.

Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity
Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA) is a statewide organization supported by a coalition of more than 500 public, private, academic, professional and volunteer groups, working to promote policies and environments that support healthy eating and activity.

The mission of PANA is to build statewide capacity for developing an environment to support and promote active lifestyles and healthy food choices through collaboration and coordinated communication. Using the Pennsylvania Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan as a guide, PANA's efforts include outreach and education, advocacy, and evaluation in three priority areas: community, school, and health care settings.

Education Programs for Separated and Divorcing Parents
Hundreds of courts and communities across the country have implemented education programs for separated or divorcing parents over the last decade. These programs are frequently mandated by courts for parents of minor children who are either filing for divorce or persons involved in custody litigation. The primary goal is to prevent emotional harm to children by providing the most up-to-date education on how separation and divorce affects adults and children, and what parents can do to help children adjust to their parents' separation. Penn State's Justice and Safety Institute is proud to be among agencies and institutions nationwide working in partnership with local courts to offer these programs.

Since 1995, more than 7,000 parents have attended the programs offered in six counties, and the feedback from parents has been positive and promising. In 2003, the programs received an Award of Excellence from the University Continuing Education Association Mid-Atlantic Region. Current planning is underway to develop programs in other Pennsylvania counties and extend our services to meet requests elsewhere as well.
