Can I take graduate courses as a nondegree student?

For nondegree admission, you may apply online (electronically) through the Graduate School Web site. If you do not intend to pursue a graduate degree but want to take graduate-level courses for personal enrichment, professional development, Instructional II Public Education certification, or later want to apply for degree status, you can seek admission as a nondegree student. Nondegree applicants are not required to pay the application fee. In general, nondegree applicants are not required to submit transcripts, however, under certain circumstances and depending on which campus location you choose, you may be asked to submit them. Nondegree applicants must have received, from an accredited institution, a baccalaureate degree earned under residence and credit conditions substantially equivalent to those required by Penn State (source http://www.gradsch.psu.edu/prospective/apply.html).

What if I decide I want to apply for admission into a graduate degree program after a few classes?

Changing from graduate nondegree status to regular status requires a new admission application. If you choose to enter Penn State as a graduate nondegree student, you must realize that no more than 15 credits of course work accumulated in nondegree status can count toward a graduate degree. However, admission as a nondegree student neither guarantees nor implies subsequent admission to a degree program. For more information, speak to an academic adviser or contact the college in your major.

How do I register for a Continuing Education course?

You can print and complete the registration form and fax, mail, or bring it to the Student Services office, 128 Outreach Building, University Park.

Can I earn a master's degree through Continuing Education?

Continuing Education works with the academic colleges to offer the convenience of weekend, evening, and online courses that can be applied toward master's degree programs; master's degrees are conferred through the academic colleges.

How do I find out the status of my graduate application?

If you have submitted a graduate application to Penn State and wish to check your status, you may do so by using the Graduate School's online status inquiry system. If you have submitted your application via the Web, it will take up to seventy-two hours before its status will appear in the online status inquiry system. Please note the status inquiry feature is not available between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. U.S. eastern standard time. The status inquiry system is updated once each work day.
