Penn State West Campus
Penn State's University Park campus is located in the town of State College, in the picturesque Nittany Valley of central Pennsylvania, between the Appalachian ridges and valleys and the Allegheny Plateau. State College is a community of about 40,000; the University has a student population of about 44,000 on this campus, and a total of 40,000 at twenty-three other locations.
The Nittany Lion Inn is a recommended lodging facility for conference participants. A Penn State landmark, the Inn has been a focal point for fine lodging and dining in
central Pennsylvania for more than seventy years. This on-campus, full-service hotel is just a five-minute walk from the conference venue, with airport shuttle on demand. Lower-cost
accommodations will also be available in newly renovated dormitories (four-room suites with shared bathrooms). These locations are a pleasant ten-minute walk from downtown State
College with its numerous shops and restaurants.
Recreational opportunities abound in the area. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy touring nearby Penn's Cave, hiking and boating at the Stone Valley Environmental Center, or exploring the trails at Rothrock State Park.
The campus has art, anthropology, and sports museums and smaller galleries. Among its various recreational
opportunities are the thirty-six-hole Blue and White golf courses, as well as numerous tennis courts, gymnasiums, and swimming facilities. A favorite stop for visitors in the summer
is the Berkey Creamery, which produces the largest amount of ice cream of any university in the country-including a flavor, Peachy Paterno, named in honor of Joe Paterno, Penn State's
noted football coach.
