Natural gas development is spreading in Pennsylvania and throughout the Appalachian Basin as interest in the Marcellus and Utica Shale continues to increase. By addressing concerns and identifying common goals with key stakeholders in the process, collaborative partnerships can facilitate the safe, efficient, and environmentally sound recovery of the natural resource.

The 2012 Marcellus Summit is scheduled for October 10–12, 2012, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. Penn State Cooperative Extension and Penn State Outreach are partnering to host this fifth annual event.

Real Issues, Balanced Perspectives: The 2012 Marcellus Summit will feature topics on real issues and provide a balanced perspective on shale gas development in the Appalachian Basin. Attendees will identify and discuss challenges, opportunities, and common goals (environmental concerns, regional infrastructure development, issues for local governments, local economic opportunities, and legal issues related to natural gas development) so that stakeholders can make informed, educated decisions that best suit the needs of the region. These timely discussions can also help communities improve local decision making, empower them to guide their own decisions, and improve the social and economic well-being of their citizens.

Who Should Attend: Industry representatives, legislators, attorneys, legal authorities, county and municipal elected officials, state and federal agency staff, planning officials and members of county or community task forces, chambers of commerce, and environmental and community groups. A broad representation of stakeholders from MD, NY, OH, PA, and WV are expected to participate in the conference.

Outcomes: The 2012 Marcellus Summit will provide a forum for a variety of stakeholders and experts in the field of shale gas production to meet and discuss key issues. Because of the broad expertise from a variety of sources, including academia, the federal government, state governments, environmental groups, and the gas industry, the summit will present a unique opportunity to learn, network, and share your thoughts and potential concerns over Marcellus shale gas development.

Planned Educational Topics:

  • Creating meaningful community dialogue on hydraulic fracturing and shale gas
  • Municipal-level impacts and regulation of Marcellus development
  • Legal issues in natural gas leasing and development
  • Evolving economics and geology of the Marcellus, Utica, and associated shale plays
