Testimonials

"I am still friends with people that I met at camp. It is a life-changing experience!"

Camp Options

Q: Which option may I apply for?
A: If you have completed eighth grade, you may apply for any of the five options.

Q: May I sign up for more than one option?
A: Campers may choose to participate either in a single option or in a double option. (The double option of concert band and piano is not available due to scheduling conflicts.) The double option of concert band and orchestra for wind players will not be determined until the placement audition on the first day of camp. If campers choose to double, they will participate in both options fully but take fewer elective classes. They will also perform in both Saturday concerts.

Q: Is there a vocal jazz or show choir option?
A: No. The concert choir sings a comprehensive formal choral repertoire.

Piano Camp Option

Q: What activities do piano campers participate in?
A: Piano students receive three half-hour private lessons during the week. Instruction also includes group activities chosen from among the following topics: piano technique, keyboard literature, musicianship, ensemble playing, and theory.

Q: When do the piano camp students perform?
A: Piano students will audition early in the week for selection for the honors recital. The winners will perform in the honors recital on Thursday night of camp week, while the runners-up will perform in the chamber music recital on Friday night of camp week. Twelve preselected campers will perform in public master classes with Penn State faculty throughout the week, and all campers will perform in the final recital on Saturday morning.

Q: Will my recording be returned?
A: No, audition recordings cannot be returned. Be sure to keep a copy for your records.

Q: What format is best for my audition tape?
A: Both cassette and CD are acceptable. Please, no MP3s, DATs, or video recordings.

Q: What kind of music should I prepare for my recorded audition?
A: Two contrasting selections from the standard piano repertoire at or above the level of "Bach: Two Part Inventions." Please, no jazz, Broadway, or original compositions.

Q: How much time will I have available to practice?
A: If you are participating in the piano option only, you will have approximately five hours per day of monitored practice time. If you double with another option (choir, jazz, etc.), your monitored practice time at the piano will be limited to three hours per day.

Q: What should I bring if I sign up for a private lesson?
A: Piano campers should bring the musical scores for their current repertoire, a metronome, and a protective carry bag for their music. Also, be sure that you memorize at least two works before coming to camp.
