Audition
Q: Do I need to send in an audition recording?
A: Only if you are applying for the piano option.
Q: Will I need to audition for ensemble placement when I arrive for camp?
A: Yes. All participants will be auditioned on the afternoon of arrival (Sunday) for placement into the appropriate classes for the week.
Ensemble Placement Auditions
All campers may participate in a maximum of two ensembles. Those interested in the concert band and/or jazz ensemble and/or concert choir are guaranteed placement in those ensembles. All strings are guaranteed placement in the orchestra. All concert band, jazz ensemble, concert choir, and orchestral string campers will be asked to audition for part placement. Because of the limited number of winds and percussionists needed for the orchestra, the wind and percussion sections of the orchestra will be selected through the on-site auditions on Sunday. These placements are not guaranteed.
Concert Band and Orchestra
Prepare two contrasting selections/excerpts of one to two minutes that best demonstrate your playing ability. Percussionists should prepare pieces for as many of the three main percussion instruments (snare drum, keyboard, timpani) as possible. Do not feel pressured to perform on an instrument that you feel uncomfortable playing. All campers auditioning for the concert band will also be asked to sight-read.
Jazz Ensembles
The audition will consist of some simple sight-reading material to assess style and sound, plus a couple of easier key scales. You will not need a prepared piece for this audition. If you improvise and want to do so in your audition, we will hear that also.
Concert Choir
The audition will consist of a range test for part placement, tonal memory, and sight-singing. You will also be asked to sing a familiar song (e.g., "My Country 'Tis of Thee") to determine tone quality. No prepared selections are required. Please warm up prior to your audition!
