About the Program

Microbial Fuel CellThere is great interest in new ways to make renewable energy from biomass and organic waste matter. Electricity can be directly generated in microbial fuel cells (MFCs), and hydrogen can be produced in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). In both systems, bacteria break down organic matter and release electrons to a circuit, producing current. In an MFC these electrons combine with oxygen and protons (to produce water) and generate electricity at about half of a volt. In an MEC the voltage produced by the bacteria is boosted by an external power source so that electrons can combine with protons at the cathode to produce hydrogen gas at high yields.

Please join us for this Microbial Fuel Cell Symposium; it will be the first time that researchers gather from around the world to talk specifically about using MFCs and MECs for electricity and hydrogen production. The symposium will be held at Penn State, a university known for its advanced research in bioenergy production.

At this symposium you can learn from and network with top researchers (and their teams) from around the world. Those invited to participate include Korneel Rabaey and Jürg Keller (Australia); Willy Verstraete (Belgium); Serge Guliot (Canada); Xia Huang and Nanqi Ren (China); Uwe Schröder (Germany); InSeop Chang (Korea); Bert Hamelers (The Netherlands); and Lars Angenent, Ken Nealson, Derek Lovley, Hong Liu, and Bruce Rittmann (United States). The symposium will be chaired by two well-known researchers in the field, Bruce Logan and John Regan.

The topics will include:
.    system architecture
.    methods for increasing current and power densities
.    exoelectrogenic bacteria ecology and genomics
.    innovative materials and catalysts
.    new application
.    scaling up and commercialization

Presymposium Workshop Lab

The Presymposium Workshop is full. Presymposium Workshop registration is no longer being accepted.

A presymposium workshop lab is scheduled on Tuesday, May 27, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The lab is limited to twenty people. Please indicate on the registration form that you would like to apply to attend. After the April 25 early-registration deadline, you will be notified by separate e-mail if symposium organizers are able to accommodate your request. There is no additional registration fee to participate.
