2009 Award Winners

Talented high school students and teachers from across the state gathered to participate in the forty-fifth Annual Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (PA-JSHS) at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College from March 22 to 24, 2009. The Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is part of an established national program of the Academy of Applied Science and the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2009–10.

The paper and poster presentations require each student to prepare a written report describing original research results in science, mathematics, or engineering. The presentations represent the finest efforts of high school students in the state toward either original laboratory or field research, or original work in mathematics or the humanistic aspects of science.

Overall category winners of the 2009 PA-JSHS were Janet Song, first place presentation in Medicine, Health and Behavioral Sciences, Methacton High School; Daniel Ladd, first place presentation in Life Sciences, Lewisburg Area High School; Caroline Lang, first place presentation in Physical Science and Engineering, Independence Homeschool; Catherine LaBuz, first place presentation in Earth, Space and Environmental Sciences, Hazleton Area High School; Akansh Murthy, second place presentation in Medicine, Health and Behavioral Sciences, Fox Chapel Area High School; Brad Williams, second place presentation in Physical Science and Engineering, Bishop McDevitt High School; Sophie Reeder, second place in Life Sciences, Muncy High School; Theresa Patten, first place poster, Marian Catholic High School, and Evan Shoemaker, second place poster, Hazleton Area High School.

State finalists going on to the national Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colorado were Janet Song, Methacton High School; Caroline Lang, Independence Homeschool; Catherine LaBuz, Hazleton Area High School; Theresa Patten, Marian Catholic High School; Daniel Ladd, Lewisburg Area High School. They were accompanied by Dr. David Klindienst, Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Director.
