Call for Session Proposals
The Governor's Conference on Higher Education, "Pathways to College Success," will be held March 17–18, 2009, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College, Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) welcomes session proposals that concern the conference theme, Access and Success in Postsecondary Education: Preparing for Success in Higher Education, within the following tracks: Preparing for Success in Higher Education, Succeeding in Higher Education, and Foundations for Institutional Success.
PDE invites proposals based on program evaluations, original research and scholarship, best practices in programming and policy, and critical issues facing higher education in Pennsylvania and the nation as a whole. Proposals are due by midnight on Sunday, February 8, 2009.
Proposal Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Relation to the conference theme of access and student success in postsecondary education.
- Use of data-driven evidence. Presentation is based on evidence of improved student learning and performance or other outcome measures.
- Connection to best practices. Presentation demonstrates best practices through experience and research, or a technique or method that has proven to reliably lead to a desired result.
- Use of Innovation. Presentation introduces or explains advancement in a new method, synthesis of knowledge, or a successful implementation of a creative idea or technology.
- Focus on a critical issue related to the conference theme. Presentation thoroughly discusses a critical issue facing higher education and provides a reasonable solution (policy, program, or other) based on sound evidence.
Once accepted, conference planners will categorize the proposals into the following tracks:
- Preparing for Success in Higher Education
- Succeeding in Higher Education
- Foundations for Institutional Success
Additional information:
- Breakout sessions are one hour and fifteen minutes and should allow appropriate time for questions and answers from the participants.
- PDE welcomes panels of presenters. Collaboration among organizations is encouraged.
- If the proposal is a panel presentation, please list the primary session presenter as well as all panelists on the Call for Proposals form.
- All meeting rooms will be equipped with a laptop, screen, LCD projector, and podium with microphone (if room size requires). Please indicate any additional AV needs on the Call for Proposals form. Presentations should be brought to the conference on a portable drive and will be loaded onto the meeting room computer the day of the presentation.
- Presenters will be notified by February 13, 2009.
- Selected presenters must register for the conference. Registration form will be available soon.

Submission of Form:
To submit a session proposal, complete the Call for Proposals form and e-mail it to Barb Kuhn at bkuhn@state.pa.us.
Deadline:
All proposals must be submitted by e-mail using the Call for Proposals form, no later than midnight on Sunday February 8, 2009. Proposals in other formats will not be considered.
