Educator's Day
Penn State University Park
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Penn State is hosting the 2008 meeting of the American Physical Society’s (APS) Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optics Physics (DAMOP). In conjunction with this meeting the Eberly College of Science will be hosting an Educators’ Day. We welcome high school physics teachers from all across Pennsylvania to Penn State University Park on Tuesday, May 27, for this rare and exciting event! The event will feature keynote talks from:
- Dr. William D. Phillips, National Institute of Standards and Technology, 1997 Nobel Laureate (“for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light”)
- Dr. Louis Bloomfield, University of Virginia, author of How Things Work
In addition, there will be hands-on optics activities, a tour of the Penn State Breazeale Nuclear Reactor Facility, lunch and an evening reception with DAMOP physicists, and fun with Physics Songs songwriter and physics professor Dr. Walter Smith (Haverford College) on Monday evening.
Registration
To register, visit http://offering.psu.edu/educators. The number of spaces available for this event is limited, so apply right away to guarantee your space!
This event is free to physics teachers throughout Pennsylvania! Plus:
- Housing for teachers living more than sixty miles from State College will be provided for the night of Monday, May 26.
- Travel expenses (mileage and parking) will be covered, and breakfast and lunch during the Educators’ Day will be provided.
- We will cover your school district’s cost of a substitute teacher for the day (up to $100).
- You will obtain a certificate for Act 48 credit* for participating in this event.
- You will go home with materials that you can use in your physics classroom.
If you have any questions, please contact Stephen Van Hook at sjv11@psu.edu.

Pennsylvania Science Standards
This event will directly address several Pennsylvania Science Standards:
- “Describe light effects (e.g, Doppler effect, dispersion, absorption, emission spectra, polarization, interference)” and “Describe and measure the motion of sound, light, and other objects” (Standard 3.4.10.C)
- “Evaluate wave properties of frequency, wavelength, and speed as applied to sound and light through different media” (Standard 3.4.12.C)
- “Critically evaluate the status of existing theories (e.g., … wave theory of light …)” (Standard 3.2.12.A)
- “Classify and describe, in equation form, types of chemical and nuclear reactions,” “Explain how radioactive isotopes that are subject to decay can be used to estimate the age of materials,” and “Apply the predictability of nuclear decay to estimate the age of materials that contain radioactive isotopes” (Standard 3.4.12.A)
*Penn State is an Act 48–approved provider. Professional educators are encouraged to confirm that this program fits their school district’s professional development plan for Act 48.
