Executive Summary
The Department of Energy and Geo-Environmental Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University and the Colorado School of Mines are pleased to host the second annual meeting of the Industry Summit on Mining Performance: How to Improve It, How to Sustain It, How to Reduce Costs, in downtown Denver, Colorado, September 21-22, 2005. The conference will be a gathering place to discuss performance improvement issues, opportunities, and challenges and will include presentations from industry leaders in key mining sectors--coal, metals, and nonmetallic minerals--as well as from customers, suppliers, and others with a keen interest in mining industry performance.

The conference will address a variety of performance improvement topics for the industry. Examples include:

  • Business Process Improvement (BPI) case studies in mining
  • Research in BPI performance
  • People development needed to support BPI
  • BPI in sustainable development
  • Use of BPI in safety
  • BPI as a means to reduce costs
  • BPI by mining industry suppliers
  • BPI and risk management

These topics were identified by an industry steering committee composed of senior managers from ten organizations (listed below) to ensure the timeliness and importance of presentations at the conference.

Other key attributes of the conference include one day of preconference workshops on the tools and measuring effectiveness of BPI. On September 23, companies that dispatch multiple attendees will have the opportunity to have internal meetings (as was done at the first conference) on BPI.

The Conference Objective:
The conference objective is to identify how companies in the extractive industries are achieving and sustaining 20- to 40-percent improvements in cost and productivity through process improvement initiatives. Learn how you can do it too. Focus on the tools and methods used to get it done.
