HIV/AIDS in the 21st Century

This course presents an overview of how the biology and epidemiology of—and the societal reactions to—HIV/AIDS have changed over the last three decades of dealing with this disease. The most updated information regarding risk and transmission; signs, symptoms, and infection progression; and treatment will be provided. The experience of living with HIV/AIDS in the 21st century will be explored.

Course Objectives: 

  • Identify the modes of transmission, signs, and symptoms of various sexually transmissible infections, including HIV.
  • Describe the prevalence of various STIs/HIV among young people.
  • Explain how at least 5 bio-psycho-social factors increase the risk of STI/HIV infection among young people.
  • Create learning experiences for a targeted group of young people to prevent the risk of contracting an STI/HIV.

Risky Business: STIs/HIV and Youth

This course addresses the risk profiles and risk factors for the epidemic spread of sexually transmitted infections—including HIV—among adolescents and young adults. The goal of this course is to help prevent the spread of STIs/HIV through preventive education.

Course Objectives: 

  • Create a timeline of the major developments in the fight against HIV/AIDS since its recognition in the early 1980s.
  • Summarize the most updated information regarding transmission; signs, symptoms and infection progression; and treatment for HIV/AIDS.
  • Identify 5 groups that are currently most at-risk in the U.S. and describe the bio-psycho-social factors that increase/decrease risk for each group.
  • Describe what it is like for someone to be HIV+ and the stigma she or he faces.
  • Create learning experiences for a target group to increase HIV/AIDS awareness and knowledge and develop more positive attitudes towards HIV prevention and people living with HIV disease.
