About the Course
Spring 2007
This course will combine classroom lectures at Penn State with a seven-day, off-site Alpine hut-to-hut trekking experience. Participants will apply the knowledge learned in the classroom while hiking in the Mont Blanc region in France, Switzerland, and Italy. The lectures will cover environmental issues, outdoor living skills, trail first aid and safety, and use of maps and compasses, in addition to comprehensive physical training to prepare for the trek. The expedition starts at the Geneva International Airport, where the class will meet to travel to the trailhead at the foot of the Mont Blanc range. We will hike an average of seven to eight hours daily on moderate to strenuous terrain, taking in some of the best of Mont Blanc scenery. Hikers will stay in mountain huts and rustic hotels. Distances range from seven to ten miles per day. Elevation gains and losses are generally 1,500-2,500 feet. We will be trekking in all weather conditions. The days can be warm and sunny, the nights cool and clear. It can rain and possibly snow!
