Call for Proposals

Submit your proposals here: http://www.uwex.edu/ics/nosc2008/.

All proposals must be submitted online and are due by February 25, 2008. The submission system is user-friendly and allows for providing information for multiple co-presenters.

Successful applicants will be notified via e-mail by April 15, 2008.

Presentation Options:

Oral sessions will be 45 minutes in length. Presenters should develop interactive sessions to share information; they should allow a generous amount of time for group discussion.

Posters will be continuously on display between 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, and 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8. To encourage networking and discussion about the displayed work, multiple sessions will be scheduled at which the presenters will be expected to be at their posters.

Conference Purpose:

The purpose of the 2008 national Outreach Scholarship Conference is to provide an opportunity for critical reflection on the public mission and work of an academic institution — along with the scholarship underpinning this work — and to strengthen institutional support for engagement and public scholarship.

Conference Objectives:

  • To foster debate on the public mission and work of the academic institution
  • To examine theory, methods, practice, and evaluation of engaged scholarship
  • To clarify the expectations of community and university partners in engagement
  • To explore and identify strategies for strengthening institutional support

Conference Tracks:

  • What is the future of engagement in higher education?

Engaged universities are committed to a public mission and work with communities. With many political, financial, and other challenges facing higher education, how should universities shape engagement and their public work for the future?

  • How can engaged scholarship enhance a broad, integrated approach to teaching, research, and service?

Integrating disciplines is not always the focus in higher education; engineers talk with engineers, educators with educators, and artists with artists. How can expanding engaged scholarship within and across disciplines strengthen teaching, research, and service for universities and communities?

  • What do communities expect from engaged universities?

Engagement presumes community involvement in outreach scholarship. To what extent are community voices being heard by universities? What are they saying?

  • What are the positive and challenging aspects of community-university partnerships?

Community-university partnerships are central to engagement. Based on experience, what factors are important in establishing and growing these relationships?

  • What is the importance of theory, practice, and evaluation in engaged scholarship?

Ideally, engagement strengthens university research and teaching, and helps resolve community issues. How do theory, practice, and evaluation contribute to scholarship-based engagement?

  • What motivates faculty involvement in engaged scholarship?

Faculty feel ever-increasing pressure to publish more, secure external funding, and be innovative in their teaching, yet many carry out their work in close collaboration with citizens and communities. What factors encourage and hinder faculty to be engaged scholars?

  • What institutional changes are needed to achieve the promise of public engagement?

Many universities have responded positively, even aggressively, to recent calls to renew their commitments to public work. What leadership, organization, and administrative innovations are necessary to strengthen university engagement?
