| "Outreach
to our communities and constituents is a
vital mission for many institutions of higher
education," according to Penn State President
Graham B. Spanier.
Leaders from the University of Wisconsin,
the University of Georgia and The Ohio State
University--institutions that are joining
Penn State in sponsoring the national Outreach
Scholarship Conference--add their thoughts
about the meaning of scholarly engagement:
-
"The University of Wisconsin's
definition of scholarship means faculty
must be creative thinkers, have peers
validate their work, add that work to
the disciplinary knowledge base and
confirm that those for whom it is intended
value it."
-
--Kevin P. Reilly,
President, University of Wisconsin System
-
-
"The scholarship of
engagement underscores the roles of
teaching, research and outreach in addressing
the growing number of critical societal
issues: teaching to prepare students
for participation in an ever-changing
world; research to investigate pressing
issues; and outreach to contribute to
the public good."
-
--Michael Adams,
President, University of Georgia
-
-
"When we engage in scholarly
research, teaching and service in partnership
with the community, we not only share
our knowledge but also bring new knowledge
back to the university to influence
our future work. This reciprocal partnership
with the community enhances the scholarship
occurring within our universities."

--Bobby D. Moser,
Vice President, University Outreach
The Ohio State University
