In an effort to coordinate the many Penn State projects addressing childhood obesity, the College of Health and Human Development launched the Childhood Obesity Initiative in February 2003. Faculty, students and staff from the colleges of Health and Human Development, Agricultural Sciences and Medicine with Cooperative Extension and various other Outreach units are all a part of this project.

According to Dr. Fred Vondracek, associate dean for Undergraduate Studies and Outreach in the College of Health and Human Development, childhood obesity is a national problem with multiple complex causes. "Consequently, finding solutions will involve the dedication of many individuals across disciplinary and organizational boundaries," he said. "Penn State's Childhood Obesity Initiative is a step toward this objective."
