As part of a new partnership between Penn State and the U.S. Department of Defense, Penn State faculty members helped middle and high school teachers enhance their science knowledge and improve their research skills:

*Dr. A. Catharine Ross (left, in top photo), professor of nutrition and holder of the Dorothy Foehr Huck Chair in Nutrition, College of Health and Human Development, and teacher Richard Schlenker worked on the project Understanding the Hormonal Activity of Vitamin A.
*Dr. Lynn Carpenter (right, in middle photo), associate professor of electrical engineering, College of Engineering, and teacher Paul Sidoff worked on the project Conformal Antennas.
*Dr. Charles Fisher (left, in bottom photo), professor of biology, Eberly College of Science, and teacher Herald Roettger worked on the project Physiology, Ecology and Phylogenetics of Hydrothermal-vent and Cold-seep Fauna.

The Eberly College of Science is sponsoring this pioneering professional development program with the Department of Defense, in collaboration with the Lewis Center for Educational Research in California. Faculty members from the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, the College of Engineering and the College of Health and Human Development are participating in the program.

For the pilot year of the program, 34 teachers based in Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom traveled to University Park campus for training. They were selected to participate in the program through an application and screening process. The program is expected to continue during the next two summers.
