Penn State Public Broadcasting in Pennsylvania’s communities

*Together WPSX-TV Channel 3 and WPSU-FM reach 1.5 million people in 29 central Pennsylvania and southern New York counties.
*For many rural Pennsylvanians, WPSX-TV is the only television signal they can receive without cable.
*WPSX-TV produces nearly 300 programs a year and provides 8,760 hours of public television programming.
*About 150 University faculty share their expertise through WPSX-TV each year.
*More than 15,500 members of WPSX and WPSU make up the largest nonprofit membership base in central Pennsylvania.
*WPSX-TV delivers educational services to teachers, parents and students throughout the viewing area, including programs of the Allegheny Educational Broadcast Council, the WPSX Ready to Learn service, the Teacher Line professional development program for teachers and the Great Teachers annual writing contest sponsored by WPSX-TV, the Pennsylvania State Education Association and MuRata Electronics.

Penn State Public Broadcasting Awards

  Since 1965, Penn State Public Broadcasting has been honored with dozens of national and regional awards for excellence in production, programming, promotion and all other areas of broadcasting. Highlights of some of the awards WPSX-TV and WPSU-FM have received include:

*Public Radio Development and Marketing Conference Small Station Membership Award and National Radio Award for the WPSU Web site
*Foundation for Women in Radio and Television Gracie Allen Award Honorable Mention and International Radio Award New York Festival Finalist for Producer Cindi Deutschman’s two-hour documentary Pam’s Story, about going through pregnancy after a stillbirth
*Radio and Television News Directors Association Edward R. Murrow Regional Award for Your Voice,Your Choice, a joint WPSU/WPSX election-year democracy project

*National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences Regional Emmy Award Outstanding Sports Series for Center Court with Rene Portland
*Eastern Region Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Communications Award for Television for the WPSX Extension Minutes
*Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Award for Excellence in Best Programming for Children for What’s in the News
1999
*Regional Emmy Award Outstanding Children’s Series for What’s in the News
*Camera/Programming for PA’s Route 6 and Center Court with Rene Portland
*Society of Professional Journalists, Philadelphia Chapter, Best Documentary for We Are ... Penn State
*The Council on International Nontheatrical Events (CINE) Golden Eagle Award for Legendary Lighthouses of Maine, a national PBS series co-produced by Penn State Public Broadcasting and Driftwood Productions Inc.
*Communicator Award of Distinction for Radio News Feature Into the Wild
*National Educational Media Network’s Bronze Apple for “What’s in the News: Project Neurolab” with Penn State professor and astronaut Dr. James Pawelczyk
*Children’s Television International School Television Hall of Fame for What’s in the News
