Children build and launch rockets

Fifth- and sixth-graders from McKeesport, Pa., area schools learned how to build and launch rockets during a program presented by Penn State McKeesport’s division of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, in association with the Penn State Educational Partnership Program and Penn State Cooperative Extension.

“The lessons were from the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office and 4-H lesson plans,” KeriAnn MeDasie, Penn State McKeesport student coordinator of the program, said.

Children learned about the history and science of rocketry and spent time building and decorating rockets made out of two-liter plastic bottles. On the third day of the program, they launched their rockets.

“The rockets were a success, and after the rocket launching, every child was given a completion award,” MeDasie said.

The Penn State Educational Partnership Program is an early intervention program designed to help youth acquire skills and attitudes that will enable them to go on to college. Penn State McKeesport has operated the program in the McKeesport community for 10 years.
