Philadelphia 4-Hers represent Penn State at
Republican National Convention

By Gary Abdullah

Ten young people from three 4-H clubs in the Philadelphia area represented Penn State at the 2000 Republican National Convention held in Philadelphia. They served as the color guard for the opening session of the convention.

Sponsored by Penn State Cooperative Extension, the 4-Hers carried the American and Pennsylvania flags and a 4-H banner onto the stage of the First Union Center and led participants in the pledge of allegiance.

“It’s an honor they’ll remember for the rest of their lives,” Jacqueline Simons, 4-H youth program aide for Penn State Cooperative Extension, Philadelphia County, said.

Frederick Davis, director of Penn State Cooperative Extension and Outreach for the Southeast Region, echoed this sentiment, noting, “This was truly a historic event for these 4-Hers. They represented their 4-H clubs, as well as every Pennsylvania 4-H club, to the nation and world. I am extremely proud of these 4-Hers, and I’m pleased that our 4-H clubs were invited to be a part of this important event.”

The 4-H contingent represents members of the chapter’s livestock, equestrian and rabbit-raising clubs, and all members reside in the Roxborough and Northeast sections of Philadelphia. Simons said past Republican conventions have had 4-H representatives, but this comes as a fitting reward for a very diligent group of youngsters.

“They’ve been participating and doing a great job, getting out to other counties and socializing,” she said. “It’s amazing to see how these kids handle everything — from horses to rabbits to livestock. We’re so proud to have them representing 4-H and Penn State Cooperative Extension.”

County Extension Director Julie Fabsik-Swarts and Irma Mimmick, 4-H leader, also attended the Republican Convention. They and Simons served as chaperones for the group.

Ted Burgess, national organizer for the 2000 Republican National Convention, gives final instructions to the Philadelphia County 4-H members who served as the color guard for the opening session of the convention, held in Philadelphia.
