Twenty-three managers from more than a dozen companies in Brazil spent a week at Penn State’s University Park campus studying strategic management issues and visiting area businesses, according to John McKissick, lead faculty member for the Management Development Programs and Services project.

The managers are working on a noncredit International Management and Leadership certificate program in Brazil at ISPG, an acronym that stands for Higher Institute for Postgraduate Studies in the Portuguese language. Penn State’s Management Development Programs and Services faculty members are conducting part of the certificate program. This is the first time Management Development has worked with ISPG, McKissick said.

“We reviewed their curriculum and designed our five-day program to offer courses to complement the areas they had already covered,” McKissick said. “We have translators for the lectures, and we’re providing guidance for the classroom exercises and group discussions.”

Some of the sessions were held in Penn State’s Management Development Technology Center at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. The Management Development Technology Center is a state-of-the-art information technology classroom designed to enhance learning and group communication.

“Coming to Penn State is an opportunity for these managers to benchmark their best practices in the United States and in the global business arena,” McKissick said. “They will take home what they are learning and apply it in their companies. Our alliance with ISPG is creating a lot of goodwill for Penn State.”

McKissick and Management Development faculty members Dennis McCartin, Dr. Michael Gerfin and Martin Brill taught sessions during the program.
