Dr. Janice Hamlet (photo at left), professor of communications at Shippensburg University, gave the keynote address during the second Health Empowerment and Black Women Conference held last spring at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. She spoke on the topic “Something Within: The Healing Power of Spirituality.” Fifty women attended this forum designed to increase awareness of healthy strategies and educational interventions that African-American women can use to empower themselves to improve their health and that of their families and communities. The conference was developed by the College of Health and Human Development and the Center for Special Populations, in collaboration with Outreach and Cooperative Extension’s Continuing Education and Conferences and Institutes units. The program included a free health screening and risk appraisal for participants, as well as workshops on topics such as depression, arthritis and other health care issues.
