Pennsylvania’s First Lady Michele Ridge (photo at left) was at University Park campus last May to help launch the Penn State–Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) Partnership for Prevention to fight alcohol abuse. Nearly 150 Penn State administrators, state leaders and community representatives attended the inaugural conference to develop local campus–community coalitions to plan and implement strategies to prevent alcohol problems. Participants (top photo) met in small groups to talk about the excessive use of alcohol on college campuses, share information on this problem and develop prevention and intervention strategies. Penn State faculty, staff and students are now working on projects to address health and behavioral issues related to alcohol abuse. The conference was sponsored by Penn State and the PLCB and supported by the Penn State Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs; the College of Health and Human Development and Department of Biobehavioral Health; the College of Education and Department of Counselor Education, Counseling Psychology and Rehabilitation Services; the Commission on the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Abuse; and Penn State Outreach and Cooperative Extension.
