School of Nursing conference focuses on end-of-life care

Dr. Gail Ann DeLuca Havens
Dr. Gail Ann DeLuca Havens, assistant professor of nursing in the Penn State School of Nursing, identified a need for the latest knowledge and techniques essential in the care of people with terminal conditions and organized an outreach program to meet this need.

She convened the Coalition for End-of-Life Care in Central Pennsylvania and collaborated with coalition members to plan the conference on Improving End-of-Life Care: A Community Commitment. Seventy-nine physicians, nurses, allied health care personnel and clergypersons who care for people who are at the end of their lives gathered at Penn State to learn about advances in palliative care or end-of-life care and related areas. Participants also shared their experiences working with these patients.

“Evaluations by conference participants were extremely positive,” Havens said. “There is a very real need for this kind of knowledge in our communities.”

The School of Nursing in the College of Health and Human Development sponsored the conference in collaboration with the Coalition for End of Life Care in Central Pennsylvania. Other supporters included Centre Community Hospital, Centre Home Care Inc. and Tyrone Hospital.
